Ingredients

 
  • 3 slices bacon, diced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 (15-ounce) cans great northern beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup lightly-packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Baked Beans

You can’t have a barbecue without baked beans.  I love the smoky flavor of the bacon combined with the tangy ketchup and sweet molasses.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large Dutch oven, cook the bacon over medium heat until the fat is rendered. Remove the bacon and set aside. Add onion and bay leaf to the pot and cook until onions are translucent, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to low and add bacon and remaining ingredients. Stir until well combined. Cover and bake for 40 minutes. Stir before serving.
